Minnesota’s First Weed Wedding
By Kastina / April 18, 2025

What happens when you mix weed with a wedding? We’ll tell you.
Kastina & Co. had the unique experience this past October of planning Minnesota’s first cannabis-centered wedding (and as we like to say) – the first weed wedding done well. When Stillwater-based couple Rachelle and Kurt got engaged in 2013, they immediately knew they wanted to incorporate cannabis into their big day. The Kastina & Co. team prides itself on being leaders in innovative wedding planning, and this event was the perfect opportunity to showcase how cannabis can be seamlessly and elegantly integrated into modern weddings.
Why Rachelle & Kurt Wanted a “Weed Wedding”
Rachelle and Kurt first met at a local marijuana industry networking event, so by the time they got engaged, they knew they wanted cannabis to be a focus, as it’s been a foundational element to their story. Our hope was that they could use fresh marijuana fan leaves in bouquets, boutonnieres, and reception décor to create an elegant and contemporary aesthetic. Flowers and cannabis were grown and harvested from the couple’s own garden to reinforce the couple’s personal commitment to sustainability.
The Planning
As Minnesota’s first “weed wedding,” the couple and Kastina had to be creative in their planning. The goal was to create an elegant, sophisticated atmosphere that allowed cannabis to shine. The key objectives laid out for the wedding were sharing the couple’s story, ensuring safety, and educating guests about cannabis. This approach was carefully considered to ensure the event was not only innovative but also sophisticated and safe, setting the stage for a new wave of weddings that embrace individuality and creativity.
Prioritizing Safety
Ensuring the safety of the guests was one of our top priorities. We understand that mixing alcohol and cannabis can have adverse effects, and we took deliberate steps to ensure that guests could enjoy either substances safely. The wedding was designed with consumption safety at the forefront, balancing cannabis offerings with beer, wine, and non-alcoholic options. We intentionally chose not to serve hard liquor, a decision made to prevent overconsumption and promote a safe experience for everyone.
Additionally, the cannabis offerings were carefully curated, with a knowledgeable “budtender” on-site to guide guests and educate them about dosage, THC levels, and the potential effects of cannabis. Our goal was to create an atmosphere where guests felt comfortable learning about cannabis, making informed decisions, and enjoying the experience responsibly.
Educating the Guests
At the time of the engagement, cannabis had only been legal in Minnesota for one month, which provided a unique opportunity to educate family and friends about the substance. Curated menus, descriptive materials, and the expertise of the budtender allowed guests to learn more about cannabis and its effects. Careful planning and attention to detail, not only created an unforgettable wedding for Rachelle and Kurt but also set the stage for a new approach to weddings that embrace individuality, sustainability, and cannabis culture.
The Details
The theme of the wedding was ‘classy cannabis,’ designed to honor the plant that brought the couple together in an elevated and refined way. Kurt and Rachelle wanted the experience to be family-friendly, appropriate for guests of all ages and backgrounds. To achieve this, the decor, elevated linens, table settings and florals played a vital role in creating the sophisticated atmosphere they envisioned. The creative floral team at Style Society took this vision to heart, blending locally grown blooms and Kurt’s cannabis plants. This collaboration resulted in an aesthetic that was both contemporary and timeless. From the wedding party’s bouquets and boutonnieres to the floral installations subtle touches of cannabis buds and leaves were incorporated artfully, adding a modern flair while maintaining the traditional elegance of the event.
The Bar Service: Enhancing the Experience
Liquid Motion provided the bar service, and together with the couple, spent ample time ensuring the guests would be educated on THC drinks, including dosage and potential effects. Rachelle and Kurt did not serve liquor, instead offering beer, wine, and seltzers alongside THC to help prevent any overconsumption. Guests were able to enjoy both alcohol and cannabis in moderation, allowing them to have a fun, safe experience without the risks associated with mixing alcohol and marijuana.
Rachelle and Kurt also hired a “budtender,” whom they met with ahead of the event to discuss the types of cannabis they would be serving and how best to educate their guests. They offered both THC and CBD varieties, ensuring there was something for everyone. A descriptive menu was provided to help guests understand the plant and its effects. The bud bar proved to be especially popular, with a line often outpacing that of the drink area.
Elevating the “Weed Wedding” Narrative
This wedding was more than just a celebration of love—it was a bold, creative statement about what a modern wedding can be. By incorporating cannabis in such an artful, thoughtful way, Katsina & Co., Rachelle, and Kurt set the stage for a new wave of weddings that embrace individuality, sustainability, and innovation. The aim was to dissolve the “dirty hippie” stigma surrounding cannabis weddings, showing that a “weed wedding” could not only be refined but also sophisticated and high-end. From upgraded chair rentals and luxurious linens to large floral installations and a custom-built “Bubbles & Buds” champagne and THC drink station, every element of the wedding was designed to create a memorable, elevated experience. This was not just a wedding for cannabis enthusiasts—it was a wedding that demonstrated how cannabis could be part of an elegant, modern celebration.
The Big Day
Despite some gusty winds on the day of, the event went off without a hitch. The 200-person guest list included a diverse mix of family, close friends, and cannabis professionals from across the country. Despite their differences, everyone got along as if they’d known each other for a lifetime. Some tried a cannabis drink or had a puff, others opted for a glass of wine, while some stuck to non-alcoholic options. Being able to showcase the cannabis plant in a safe and thoughtful way was a key highlight for the couple. The guests were able to learn about marijuana in a non-judgmental environment, and whether or not they decided to imbibe, the stigma around the plant eroded. Many people asked where to get the THC drinks after the wedding, including family members the couple never thought would try the products.
